Middle School Vocabulary Program

The Word Up Project

THE WORD UP PROJECT USES MULTISENSORY INSTRUCTION to build vocabulary proficiency and reading skills. The program is proven to raise state test scores.

EVERY UNIT IN THIS GROUNDBREAKING PROGRAM begins with a professionally produced rap song that incorporates and defines each vocabulary word from the unit’s word bank. Because a student’s first exposure to each word is multisensory - auditory and visual - a connection is made between the written word and its pronunciation. This highly engaging primary exposure is followed by a research-based lesson sequence designed to provide multiple, varied exposures to each word. Finally, targeted assessments in the accompanying Teacher Resource Book track students’ progress throughout the program.

THE WORDS FEATURED IN EACH LEVEL of The Word Up Project were drawn from an analysis of state tests and core reading lists, and are all high-frequency Tier 2 (interdisciplinary) vocabulary words. As a result, these are the words students are most likely to encounter in their reading. A recent study conducted by Roger Farr, former president of the International Reading Association, confirmed that The Word Up Project raises state test scores in urban, suburban and rural areas. Read more about the study results here.

THE STUDENT BOOKS feature the lyrics to the songs, word defintions and examples, and a series of research-based exercises that mimic those on many high-stakes tests and that are designed to empower students to use the words in their own speech and writing. The Teacher Resource Book includes everything an educator needs to implement the program in her classroom including lesson plans, assessments, and answer keys.
