While this lesson uses many of the skills developed in the vocabulary lessons, it deals with storytelling instead of definitions. Because the academic content is more advanced, we suggest starting with the basic writing lesson to get your students warmed up. As your students work on this lesson, encourage them to use the literary devices that were discussed earlier.
This lesson takes storytelling to the next level and can be used in multiple subjects. It can be used as a follow-up to a lesson on Five Things: Elements of a Short Story or to tell a historical account through rhyme. Students can write the rhymes in first or third person.
- Step 1: List important facts, dates and key terms to include in rhyme.
- Step 2: Write the first line. It doesn't have to rhyme!
- Step 3: Come up with rhyming words for your first line.
- Step 4: Finish the couplet with a line that is related or continues the story.
- Step 5: Repeat until you use up all your facts!
